SecuROM Total War: Medieval 2 Gold Edition

I’ve recently tried installing Total War: Medieval 2 Gold Edition onto a new laptop. When the disc runs it generates an error message that prevents the game from running. Apparently this due SecuROM detecting a software conflict such as Nero. Read the following wikipedia definition to better understand why SecuROM would do this (It’s worth mentioning that the games discs installed fine on my old laptop):

SecuROM is a CD/DVD copy protection product, most often used for computer games running under Microsoft Windows, developed by Sony DADC. SecuROM aims to resist home media duplication devices, professional duplicators, and attempts at reverse engineering the game. The use of SecuROM has generated controversy due to the fact that it is not uninstalled upon removal of the game. In 2008, consumers filed a class-action lawsuit against Electronic Arts for its use of SecuROM in the video game Spore.[1]

Even after uninstalling Nero 7 from my laptop the issue persisted. I began reading solutions that seemed to focus on registry deletions or downloading a working version of the game from SecuROM’s technical support. Before trying either of these I stumbled across a decent tidbit in a forum that I can no longer find. Furthermore the tidbit solved my problem.

To bypass the SecuROM problem with Total War: Medieval 2 Gold Edition and possibly other titles simply right click the game icon under ‘my computer’ and then select ‘open’ to browse the folder contents. Look for a file named setup.exe and double click this to run the installer. This should allow you to bypass SecuROM successfully and begin your game!
